I have uploaded a new blank winch record form to be used from this point on if at all possible.  You can find this in Club Info > Documents > Blank Winch Record Form.

Three key things about this new form which already has proven to be a lot clearer and easier to see what is happening:

  1. Launch Marshall is now recorded
  2. There is now a separate tow code and comments field
  3. Must be completed in block capitals for clarity

Tow codes are:

  • OK - Successfully completed tow launch
  • DR - Double Release
  • WL - Weak Link
  • LB - Line Break
  • GT - Guillotine

Please have a look at the form.  There are a few copies on the winch, we need to print some more.

> Launch Marshallsic! is now recorded
Why?
Statistics?
If so it could be useful to add other stats. columns, especially
LINE IN USE (L/R), to see if one line is tangling more, to log guillotine use, to have an idea how may ferrules in the line, if one line gives consistently more/less height (/tension/weak link breaks), etc.

You could replace "Complete each row after each launch" - which is more-or-less obvious ;-) with "Retention period 6 years" - which is not (IIRC).

You could replace "COMPLETE IN BLOCK CAPITALS" with "COMPLETE LEGIBLY"

SORT-of related....

There has been a tendancy to both not write legibily (block capitals is best way as people's ideas of legibility differ!) and also not complete the forms.  So why it may be obvious to you or I to complete after each row not everybody does.  Hence this formal statement and request.

With regards launch marshall, it is there for my or future CTC benefit and not statistics.  Should there be an incident we need to have a record of the involved parties and also be seen to be operating the safe and traceable environment which we do.

In that case I don't think it's needed:
TM §1.3.10 "All schools and tow clubs are required to keep a daily flight record. It should name the operating site, the students and pilots, instructor(s) and tow unit driverssic, and list the gliders and tow–line lengths used (where relevant) plus the training exercises or types of flight** carried out. Weather and wind conditions should also be recorded and where appropriate, take-off and landing times. The flight record sheets must be kept for a minimum of 6 years."
** in the club I wold say ~all flights are "pilots' discretion" so no explicit record is needed. EXCEPT if doing a tow conversion, or maybe in operator training.

big incident--> everything stops--> incident form record made of who was doing what

I can't see when a record of "who was on the radio for the 4th launch on xx/yy/2010" would ever be useful - unless you were compiling general statistics of "who's-an-asset" & "who's-a-leech"

You think that recording "L/R line" is a waste of time?
