IMPORTANT: NEW NORWICH AIRSPACE
No doubt you will all have read in Skywings of the new Norwich airspace that becomes active on March 8th 2012.
A map wil be uploaded shortly and I'll put the location in here.
This controlled airspace is a nearly cylindrical Control Zone (CTR), diameter about 15 miles, from the surface to FL50, and a bigger surrounding Control Area (CTA) about 30 miles in length and over 20 miles across, from 1500ft above sea level to FL50. Plus some twiddly bits. That's over 300 square miles of controlled airspace!
It is very definitely a no-go zone without airband radio and an RT licence. And a licence for the radio. Etc. Phone call access is a non-starter.
Despite assurances from Norwich that we should be able to negotiate some kind of controlled access on request - as is the case at many other bits of Class D airspace around the country - following a long meeting with the Norwich Air Traffic Control manager we have been offered nothing at all.
I will continue to pursue this, but in the meantime please note: the Norwich CTR/CTA is here to stay and is an area we should take great pains to avoid.
One can fly beneath the CTA, observing the 1500ft ceiling (actually less; spot heights to the west go up to nearly 200ft), but in reality you are on a final glide here.
Norwich Airport has powerful and accurate radar. Even if you escape detection, any hangie presence in this bit of airspace would reflect negatively on us all.
Long-haul XC fliers should aim to find an unambiguous visual reference like Shipdham airfield to be sure of staying out. From there it's only another 25 miles to the coast at Blakeney!
map is now available in the top navigation bar under "airspace restrictions".it is viewable by everyone, including the public.
